Fed: Labor warns PM against talking up war
Labor has warned Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD against talking up pre-emptive militaryaction against terrorists, saying it could hurt relations with Australia's Asian neighbours.
Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN says the prime minister's suggestion international lawbe changed to allow strikes against terrorists in other nations sends the wrong messageto the region.
Mr CREAN has told reporters the prime minister only ever wants to talk war.
The Labor leader says he's for engaging Australia's regional neighbours, taking a collectiveresponsibility, agreeing on a common solution to fighting terror together, and not startingto threaten regional neighbours.
Mr CREAN says Mr HOWARD's talk of terrorism and hints of tax cuts to come are designedto distract voters from Labor's landslide election win in Victoria.
Asian nations including Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines have already expressedconcern about Mr HOWARD's comments, and Labor foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD saysit's understandable.
Mr RUDD says by canvassing the prospect of military action on foreign soil, Mr HOWARDis effectively talking about war.
