Trouble In Jharkhand To woo Mittal Steel, the Jharkhand government showcased its famous Chiria mines. Problem: SAIL already owns rights to the mines.

The problem began almost soon after the chopper flew off. InSeptember last year, Jharkhand Chief Minister, Arjun Munda, took L.N.Mittal, Chairman and CEO of the world's biggest steel company, MittalSteel, on a guided aerial tour of the iron ore-rich Chiria mines.Munda was wooing Mittal to set up a steel plant in the state. Mittalwas impressed with what he saw and heard. The Chiria mines, withestimated reserves of 2.5 billion tonnes of iron ore, aren't just thelargest in Asia, but also have the highest iron content of 65 percent. So, within six weeks, Mittal signed an MoU with the stategovernment to set up a 12-million-tonne per annum steel factory at alikely investment of $9.3 …
