NSW: Bradford foreshadows NSW IVF bill
Prospective Christian Democratic Party MP JOHN BRADFORD has foreshadowed introducing
a bill to prevent single women and lesbians having access to IVF programs.
Mr BRADFORD, who is the CDP's nominee to replace Legislative Council MP ELAINE NILE,
says allowing single women to have IVF treatment is an attack on family values.
He says New South Wales should follow Victoria by amending the anti-discrimination
act to restrict access to IVF treatment for only women who are married and living with
their husbands.
Mr BRADFORD says as IVF is a costly procedure, married couples should have priority
access to the treatment.
He says the IVF treatment was established to assist married couples who are not able
to conceive naturally.
He says to allow single women access to the IVF program twists the purpose of the procedure.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD today was again forced to defend his plan to ban single
women and gay couples from using IVF by overturning a Victorian court decision.
Mr HOWARD says the government has the right to intervene in the issue because taxpayer
funds are used to pay for the IVF programs.
